Little People

i don't know how these little babies of mine suddenly grew into little outspoken people with minds of their own. isaiah is fascinated by anything and everything. not to mention, he (along with his sidekick sister) feel they're old enough to make their own decisions....soooooo independent! isaiah's new favorite words are, "but mom, that's so boring! lets do BOY stuff!" makayah's favorite non-jibberish word is "mine!" which she learned from her big brother. all the other times she'll jabber on and on about something....i just wish i could understand what she's trying to say! however, her vocabulary is quickly expanding. this morning she was "helping" me unload the dishwasher and as she handed me the clean utensils i said, "thank you." so the next time she handed me a spoon she said, "tank you!" i jumped up and down and clapped my hands in celebration...and she was so proud of herself she did the same. i love their emerging personalities. they are strong-willed and full of spirit, and no matter how aggravating it can be to get them to follow directions sometimes, i love it and wouldn't change a thing about them. isaiah has always been such a boy in every sense of the word. he loves sports, camping, pirates and swords, and getting into boyish mischief. and makayah couldn't be more opposite. she loves carrying around a purse and wearing her sparkly sunglasses. she'll climb into my closet and try on every heeled shoe i have while draping silk scarves around her head and neck. last night i attended enrichment night with makayah in tow. there happened to be a couple babies there and she headed straight for them. i ran after her thinking the stronger more competitive side of her would rage through and i'd have to stop her from strangling someone. but she bulldozed right through, came to a sudden halt (not toppling over the baby to my surprise) and gently gave the baby a nice pat on the head and cheek. next she tried to hug the babies but i did have to pull makayah away when she tried to pick one of the babies up. although she and isaiah are beginning to have their battles, she can still be so gentle and loving. speaking of battles. isaiah has begun to taunt makayah and i think its mostly because makayah has taken to screaming at the top of her lungs, cussing her poor brother out - and that really bothers isaiah ("don't be mean to me!"). she likes to take his toys away from him and run away pretending she's the victim. and once, isaiah yelled after her, "FINE! you don't have any friends anymore!! nobody is gonna play with you!" makayah babbled something under her breath and gave me a ruffled look. i shrugged my shoulders and said, "its true pookie, if you're going to be mean and steal his toys away you won't have any friends to play with - especially since he's your ONLY friend right now." she hung onto her stubborn ways for a bit longer and then finally decided it was in her best interest to apologize by going up to isaiah and giving him a hug and a kiss. and i didn't have to force them to make up! yes! it's been an interesting week observing the interaction between the two of them. they really are the best of friends...most of the time. on a different note...we spent this afternoon doing our most favorite thing as a family. after doing what we do best, sam said "what do crowfoots do best?!" and isaiah yelled out from the back seat, "SHOPPING!!" gardening came in close behind...only because isaiah and makayah love running through the sprinklers. yes, i am attempting to plant a garden this year. i really don't have a green thumb, mainly because i forget to water my plants and i hate digging through the dirt. BUT, this year i am going to tough it out and just do it. luckily we already have a mature cherry tree in bloom and all i need to do is pick the stinking cherries this time. i picked most of them last year, but i could've done better. with the help of my two little assistants, we planted some grapes, blueberries, green beans, strawberries, tomatoes, spinach, and bell peppers. i have more seeds to plant but we'll see what actually sprouts up. we'll keep ya posted.

on a sunday morning

i'm still trying to catch up with all the happenings around here and i'm a week behind. so...these are the pictures i took this past sunday. the weather was so perfect and warm. the kids loved being outside, smelling the flowers, and lying on the green grass. surprisingly we had plenty of time before we had to head to church and to sam's cousin, tiani's, homecoming. she just returned from japan not too long ago. so we spent our sunday afternoon at the adolpho's home and hung out with the family. good times. speaking of good times...i hope you all had a good laugh at the last blog post. i know i sure did. my crazy crowfoot babes make my life soooo completely amusing! bon appetit!

cannery catastrophes and a camping crybaby

i'm not sure whether to split my stories up...or just go for a possible novel here. but i'll really try to keep it short and sweet, especially since i need to go to bed in ten minutes. a couple weeks ago (the friday of conference weekend)... sam decided to have an emergency camping drill. i would've been more excited if it didnt' happen to be our date night. i had had the craziest day dragging the kids in and out of the cannery that morning and i really needed a break and some good quality grown-up time. it all began on our way to the lindon cannery. we sang old macdonald, and for some odd reason, isaiah did not want a cow to be on old macdonald's farm. however, i ignored isaiah's protests and went ahead with the dumb cow. little did i know, it would cause a huge amount of contention and frustration for isaiah. oopsie. just a little background before i go on...isaiah has never, ever blown up at me before this stupid cow incident...ever. unfortunately for me, i just pushed his buttons and sent him over the edge. before we had even gotten out of the car, he said, "mom, i'm mad at you." why isaiah? "because, you did the cow. i didn't want the cow. i don't like you now." the entire 5.5 minutes we were stuck in line to pay, isaiah managed to yell at the top of his lungs, "I DON'T LIKE YOU MOM!" just as i pulled a sucker out for my sweet little girl and replied back, "its okay, because my makayah likes me." isaiah spotted the treat and immediately tried to back peddle, "I LIKE YOU MOM, I LIKE YOU!!!" too late. and that's when all hell broke loose. i ignored the tantrum as best i could and surprisingly when i saw the chair flying across the floor and two gray-haired sister missionaries coming to the rescue...i kept my cool. i thanked the sister missionaries, smiled and grabbed hold of my fuming son and led him to the car explaining why his behavior was unacceptable...and must now pay the consequences. i still had to go back in and pick up my jam. so, i told isaiah he was confined to the car since he couldn't behave in public. i put him in the backseat, rolled down the window a couple inches and set out with makayah on my hip to the pick up door less than 20 yards away. i turned my head for a split second and isaiah had already clung to the window looking like he was gasping for air, but really was yelling for help with his fingers curled over the top of the window, "HELP ME! HELP ME!" just as an unsuspecting woman was passing by, of course - why not make a scene?! she looked to the left and looked to the right, obviously wondering where this boy's unfit mother must be - how dare she lock him in the car to suffer...until i called out from behind her, "isaiah you ARE OKAY!" she spotted me, smiled to herself and knowingly shook her head (ahh yes, i remember those days). thankfully my jam was ready and we were off in a matter of minutes. so now you can see why i was sooooooo looking forward to DATE NIGHT. oh well. i knew sam was really excited to go camping. so i made up my mind that i would be excited too, and then i actually was...for a while anyway. this time, isaiah wasn't the problem, he was an angel. he was thrilled to be going camping, sitting round the fire, roasting marshmallows, and sleeping in a tent. it was worth going just to see his eyes light up and watch him enjoy every minute. HOWEVER, little miss diva thought it might be fun to run away into the darkness every chance she got. she also has no sense of danger and would try to jump into the fire pit, almost succeeding a couple times. i was exhausted by the time she actually fell asleep for a mere two hours. she woke up at 11pm just as sam and i were getting cozy by the fire. our cute little banshee would not stop screaming and absolutely did not want to go back to bed on the ground in a tent, sharing her sleeping space. it's a good thing she's cute. sam, seeing my patience begin to wane, insisted i go home with makayah and get a good night's rest in my own bed and makayah in hers. "but babe, we can stick this out, i want to stay." sam insisted once more, "no, go home." and so we went. i got home, put makayah to bed, took a nice long warm shower, and was about to fall asleep at 12am just when i heard some banging and clattering in the kitchen. i made my way to the noise and there was poor nathan, sam's brother. yes, poor nathan, because by that time i had completely lost all patience and he was the only person there to receive my wrath. in so many words i ended up kicking him and his friend out so i could get some peace and quiet. he left quite confused..."what's up with monika?" and i thought, sam was smart to make me leave...he was trying to save his own skin. ;) anyway, i did eventually smooth things over with nathan and his friends and then they weren't so scared of me since i made them a yummy pancake breakfast complete with berries and homemade whipped cream. but back to the camping. makayah and i went back the following morning to have breakfast with our boys. isaiah thought it was the coolest thing to wake up in a tent. he and his daddy ate breakfast inside the tent and when sam accidentally spilled a bit of his orange juice on the sleeping bag, isaiah said, "daddy!" and gave a scolding grunt. sam apologized and isaiah giggled and said, "its okay daddy!" we all went to the creek nearby and took some pictures. except we had to take them quickly because makayah attempted to jump in more than once and almost lost her shoe. nevertheless, we all had a great morning in the GREAT OUTDOORS. personally i've had my fill of camping for the season if its going to involve makayah...maybe we better wait a couple months before we take her out again.

long lost crows

wow! i can't believe we missed an entire month without writing anything down. all i can say is march madness definitely hit us. we have been literally engulfed in so many things lately i feel i don't have a spare minute on the computer. the beginning of march i was busy making my kids' pow-wow outfits. and i made isaiah's outfit to match his daddy's ribbon shirt. it took quite a bit of time considering i fell ill with bronchitis. yuck. thankfully all of our family members began to pour in around that time and i was able to rest knowing that my babies were being watched. unfortunately sam's mom, ellen was sick as well. so we were both in the same boat. but things turned out alright and we still had a fun visit with everyone who came. i love our families! i am so happy we mesh so well with each other. most nights we stayed up far too late playing poker, watching movies, and of course attending the pow wow. sam sang with his drum group, and makayah and isaiah danced in the tiny tots. isaiah was thrilled when he got his two dollars and immediately ran out of the WILK ballroom staight to the craft booths, told one of the sellers he had some money and wanted to buy the little nemo fish figurine....gramma pitched in too! makayah on the other hand wouldn't let her money go and after a couple minutes began to chew on her dollar bills. anyway, it was a great weekend. and now we're just getting the house back in order. actually sam and i went on a HUGE food storage binge the last couple of weeks. it was my first time actually doing a shift at the lindon cannery. i actually enjoyed myself and we are doing some self home canning this weekend during general conference. we also have our 72 hour packs packed and found an awesome 4 season tent for an incredible deal. this particular tent is actually used for mount everest base camping! so, i'm feeling pretty good. we're hoping to do a test run soon. now, i've just got to organize everything else. so please everyone do your food storage...if you have any questions or need help, just ask!
