May Tidbits

May Tidbits
*i have been officially notified that mother's day is now over...and that sam has washed his hands of "my" children. lol

*today, makayah played "beauty shop" with samiyah. that entailed spritzing her hair with sam's travel-sized downy wrinkle spray. and i only left the room for ONE minute. i suppose that is what little sisters are for.

*Officially done with 2L year! Whoo hoo!

*a boy at the library to makayah as we were leaving: "where are you going?"
mak: "home."
boy: "do you have to go? when will i see you again?"
mak: "next wednesday!"

*Makayah's quote of the day: "mom, you know what your hair does when you take your braids out? It goes 'zig, zig, zig!'"

*makayah's quote of the day: "mom, where are the 'crowns'?"
you mean, 'CRAY-ONS?'
"ugh. mom, i'm just a little girl who doesn't know how to say 'CROWNS'!"

*Woke up in a panic at 8am thinking Isaiah was late for school. Then I realized today was a holiday and fell back asleep for a bit. It was a great night's sleep, made even better knowing there was nothing urgent to wake for.

*FHE tonight with the kids: "Makayah, where were we before we were here on Earth?" "We were in Canada."

*i'm studying in the basement of my apartment building. Don't know why I never thought of it sooner. It is cool, quiet and children free. Great for studying!!

*Is laying in bed but can hear his wife singing baby to sleep in the next room. Love her voice.

*First day of work. Check. ILSA get together. Check. Working out on the court and in the weight room. Check. No one to check in with or clear my schedule with. Check. So this is what life is like as a bachelor? Meh. Overrated. I miss my kids and the missus.

*Aww man I pigged out last night thinking it was the end of the world. Boo hoo. Although I was scared for a split second when I woke up and found Monika was not asleep next to me, but then I smelled bacon cooking and all was fine.
Thank you Jesus for wives and bacon.

*Came out of the movie theater tonight and it was so warm and humid. It almost felt like Phoenix or Vegas in early spring! Great date night with the missus, saw Bridesmaids - too funny!***

Isaiah's VHE Music Recital

Isaiah's Music Recital

tonight, we dressed up and made our way to the van hise music recital. it was so packed, we should've gotten there sooner. but, i do love how involved all the parents are. isaiah made all sorts of faces, threw his hands up, and was so entertaining. i couldn't stop laughing. that kid is a riot. he loves his school, and we do, too. it's been so fun here.

Memorial Day Picnic

Memorial Day Picnic

it was sweltering today. we were so very hot. our apartment only has a tiny swamp cooler. it was not doing the trick. we were invited to our neighbor's house, the shorter's, for a memorial day picnic. the food was great, it was awesome not to have to cook anything in this heat. plus, it's always nice chatting with friends. the kids cooled off in the kiddie pool. we went back to our hot apartment, and closed all the windows and tried to relax. even with the heat, madison is still really great.

Fun Friday Campout

Fun Friday Campout

summer is our favorite time of year in madison. wisconsin is heavenly during the summer time. we had to take advantage of the warm weather. as soon as we had packed up all the camping equipment, we drove to governor dodge. sam is an expert at setting up camp. i'm so grateful for him. we got the fire going, had burgers for dinner and s'mores for dessert. the kids and daddy slept in the tent while mimzy and i slept in the van. she did a great job for a first time camper. in the morning, daddy cooked up an amazing breakfast, and the kids went off on a nature scavenger hunt. when we had cleaned up our spot, we went hiking to see the waterfall. everything was so lovely, everything was so fun.

Mimzy Milestones and Makayah Preschool Grad

Mimzy Milestones

now that mimzy can sit alone, she is ready for her first bath. she loved it, of course. it's so fun playing with her soapy hair. she's also found her tongue and loves sticking it in and out. cutest thing ever.***

Makayah's Preschool Graduation

it's not officially a graduation, more like a promotion to the lamb class for next year. in any case, the little ceremony was adorable. the kids lined up, sang songs they had learned during the school year, and we all ate treats and took pictures afterwards. a couple of the songs included, "head shoulders knees" and "the chicken dance." i think that is one of makayah's favorites.
makayah, i am so proud of you. your teachers tell me you are so bright and so talented, and so friendly to others, and that makes my heart happy most of all. you are funny and bursting full of energy. you make friends easily and i'm thankful that you include everyone. we love you.

Ice Cream with Kwan

Ice Cream with Kwan

a fellow law student and friend of ours, kwan, had asked if we'd take some photos of her. we happily obliged. she is so kind and fun to be around. we took the photos at the park near the lake. i can't remember what the park is called now. but, there is a playground there where the children played. mimzy kept herself busy with the dandelions. after the photo shoot, we all went out for ice cream at ella's diner, courtesy of kwan.  it was a yummy treat with great company. thank you, kwan.

Isaiah's Class Field Day

Isaiah's Class Field Day
i love being part of isaiah's school day any way i can. so when ms. rieke announced that the class was walking to the nearby park, i really, really wanted to come. part of me still felt awful about not attending isaiah's book reading. i didn't want to be a forgetful or uninvolved parent. besides, isaiah's eyes always light up when he sees me during school hours. the girls and i rushed over to the school and arrived just in time. we walked and talked and makayah had a grand time pretending she was in isaiah's class as well. once we arrived at the park, the kids played with bubbles and bouncy balls, monkey bars and slides. the weather was absolutely perfect. we cooled off and ended the day with slices of watermelon. what a wonderful day.

Summer in Madison

Summer in Madison

the past few weeks we've been busy with more soccer games and practices. we love going out on saturdays for games and outings afterwards. while we were gone to maine, sam went to his friend, sir's, graduation party. i'm glad he wasn't too lonely.
mimzy has been enjoying blueberry pancakes and much more. makayah was a whiz at tap dance. we got video of her, but forgot to take pictures. today was a lazy sunday, and we strolled over to eagle heights and took family pictures. this place is beautiful!

The Trip to Maine

The Trip to Maine

uncle darrell had a baseball tournament this weekend. umpa was so nice and bought us tickets to come and watch him play in maine. unfortunately, sam was finishing up finals so he couldn't join us. we flew into boston, drove up to old orchard, maine, and cheered on uncle darrell with my parents and katrina. watching darrell pitch was so much fun. He did an awesome job. i also taught Makayah the fine art of heckling the opposing team. she is a great jinxer. go uncle darrell! the next day, after the games were over, we toured maine's beautiful light houses at fort williams park. and later, we ate gigantic maine lobster, freshly caught from the sea. it was heavenly! it's been a terrific weekend, but we gotta go back to daddy now. thanks for a great trip! love you all. ***

The Weekly Grind

The Weekly Grind

here's the thrilling breakdown of what happened for the past two weeks. samiyah is becoming a pro at eating. makayah and i whipped up some beet juice. isaiah has weekly practice and it's right down the road. sometimes we walk, but sometimes we are late and cram into the car and drive the 100 yards down to segoe park. mimzy still adores her jumperoo. daddy bought some bow-ties. the garden is coming along and the kids love playing at the park while mimzy keeps me company. and last but not least, mimzy's tummy time. she hates it. ha. ***

the top 10 of "mother's week"

10. a surprise bouquet of flowers on tuesday. they were beautiful flowers. and the next bouquet of flowers i receive...i hope makayah doesn't try to eat them, or pull them out and stick them in her hair, or throw the petals over the ground she walks on (forcing me to vacuum on a non-vacuuming day)...is this too much to ask?

 9. a new phone on wednesday. i was just fine with my old ghetto phone. sam wasn't. i think he was embarrassed every time i pulled my ghetto phone out. and he hated how the low battery signal would go off every five minutes. but i do love how i can set multiple alarms for practically everything i need to remember. i am now much less forgetful and scatterbrained. thank you, new phone. and thank you, sam.

8. thank you to my fellow soccer moms and their sage advice. treasure and cherish the time when my kids are small, and still want to cuddle, and their biggest drama is only the fact that i snuck an early peak at the mother's day gift they made for me at school, that they aren't too old and too cool to still be hugged and kissed in public (or seen with me, for that matter), and the only talking back is the occasional, "aaaawwww, mom!" despite the difficult times these mommy days can sometimes bring...these precious days are actually going to be the "easiest" as things go along, and will go by way too fast. enjoy every second of it.

 7. about that early peak...i'm sorry isaiah. i know you wanted your sweet card to be a surprise, i had no idea what was in your backpack - i was just trying to be a good mama and keep on top of school homework, announcements, etc. i still loved the card even if it wasn't given to me on mother's day, in the special way you wanted it presented. let's push the restart button, okay?

 6. on saturday after isaiah's soccer game, i received a package of fancy shmancy chocolate covered strawberries and fancy shmancy mini cheesecakes from sacramento, california...because obviously the cheese and strawberries in wisconsin just wouldn't cut it for sam. lol. i didn't get to take a picture of it's delicious fanciness because they only lasted about 10 minutes after they arrived. thank you sam, and thank you to my little vultures who just couldn't resist eating the toppings off each treat before i could get to them...you saved me a load of extra calorie burning.

 5. thank you to my fearless husband who isn't afraid to roll up his sleeves and get his hands "dirty," both figuratively and literally. figuratively, when he took all three kids saturday afternoon, so i could get my hair cut - in peace and quiet. literally, when sam threw the kids in the shower and washed them up after makayah decided to walk around town barefoot - but even more disturbing was when she ran into the men's bathroom at the movie theater (barefoot) and came out with toilet paper stuck to her foot. gross. me. out.

 4. about the movie theater - we went to see thor. awesome. absolutely awesome. it would've been even more awesome had sam and i been able to see the movie in it's entirety. but with potty breaks and a teething baby, we missed a few parts. meh, oh well.

 3. after the late mother's day movie, sam took it upon himself to completely take care of bedtime (which is just exhausting). showers, teeth brushing, pj's, and prayers...all while i lied in bed resting my weary eyes. thank you daddy sam.

 2. the beautifully clean house i awoke to really topped things off. i had about an hour to myself in the quiet and very clean house (which sam had stayed up until 4am for). it was heavenly.

 1. and my most favorite part of mother's day is the annual mother's day songs sung by the primary children. i love hearing my children sing. as crazy and challenging as they are, and as much as they make me want to pull my hair out and scream... i love their sweet voices, their bright eyes, their flashing smiles and contagious laughter, and their sweet and tender hugs and kisses. these tender moments seem to make   all the whining, sibling rivalry, boogers smeared on my pant legs,  and mess upon mess all worth it.

i am grateful for the sacred privilege of being a mother. they have taught me so much of patience, humility, love, and forgiveness. and of course, i wouldn't be half the mother i am now if it weren't for my own mother. i always think of her when i lose my patience. she rarely yelled or got mad, and she was always so very affectionate. i hope i can be more like her someday. i called her and we reminisced about the great times we had. every mother's day, i would get my brothers up and we would make my mom breakfast in bed. we almost always would serve blueberry muffins. i remember how she'd cuddle me and run her hands through my hair to help me fall asleep. so many wonderful memories. she is an amazing mother and i am thankful for her in my life.

and i can't forget my amazing mother-in-law. she raised a good son, a great father. i love when we get together and laugh and cry and tell stories late into the night. i am one lucky gal. :)

happy mother's day.

Dinner Conversation

Sam and I just died laughing to this conversation:
Sam: How was your day today, Makayah?
Mak: Good. I graduated from middle school today.
Sam: Really, wow. I think we should have a party for you. Shall we get you a car? Do you like cars?
Mak: YES!
Sam: What color?
Mak: i love a rainbowish color.
Isaiah: What's Makayah talking about?
Sam: She just graduated middle school, and she's going to get a car.
Isaiah: Makayah, how old are you?
Mak: i'm 65.
Isaiah: Dad, she's 65 and in MIDDLE SCHOOL??
Sam: Makayah, you're 65 and graduated from middle school?
Mak: yes.
Sam: Are you married?
M: yes. his name is Sam.
Sam: what is your name?
M: Rosie.
Sam: Sam and Rosie. Where did you meet?
M: at the temple.
Sam: where did you get married?
M: at the temple.
Sam: do you have any children?
M: yes, i have 65.
Sam: 65, wow. did you adopt any of them?
M: yes, ALL of them.
Sam: well, i imagine you'd have to with that many. why did you adopt 65 children?
M: so they could be in our family.
Sam: where do you live?
M: i live in...
Isaiah: SHE LIVES IN THE 80's!
i don't remember what was said or done after that line, as i was too busy choking on my water. sam and i laughed until we cried. you had to be there.

killer circuit training and tap dance

right now, i'm about to pass out. i usually go to a morning pump class (weightlifting/strength training with cardio music), and my regular teacher has been gone the past couple of classes. our sub is a former football player and he has been running us (or just myself, cuz i'm a total wimp) into the ground! i really do like the change of pace though. i mean, i hope our lady teacher comes back soon, only because her class is more fun and uptempo. but i like the football guy walking around and making sure my form is right. and most all the time, i'm happy to say, it is! i guess my muscle memory isn't too bad afterall. after today's circuit training though, i felt like i was gonna puke, just like the good ol' track practice days. ;) it really wasn't too bad, and i am glad he pushes us. i love this class and my friends who go with me. during the circuit training, (we had the scissor kick station) my friends and i would keep watch when he wasn't looking so we could stop and take a break! hahaha. oh man, i was dying and i could take a nap right now. after class was chitchatting time while makayah was still in child watch. :D i love child watch. and at 11am, i got makayah and put her tap dance shoes on. she absolutely LOVES her dance classes. we started out with ballet, twice. then branched out to gymnastics this past winter. and now, it's time to try some tap for the spring semester. i'm gonna be sad when we have to leave madison and try to find great classes like these wherever we move. and next class, i will remember to bring the camera. ;) i still have the rest of the day ahead of me. and i have a bunch of things on my to-do list. mainly laundry folding and cleaning the house. oh yes, and getting the rest of my garden planted. it makes me tired just thinking about it. better get started....
